The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that do the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace blower sits in a utility space, basement, or closet and pushes conditioned air through the house.

The evaporator coil mounts directly above or below that indoor unit and is the point where the air actually gives up its heat before moving on. A refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, and a thermostat goes on an interior wall to give the homeowner control over the whole system.
