A compressor starting up on a hot Queens afternoon carries wear from every previous summer it has worked through, and that history shows up in what a contractor finds when they open the unit. Homes in Queens County, NY run cooling about three months a year, from June through August. The contactor, the capacitor, and the condenser fan motor each take the same seasonal beating, and a repair on any one of them tells a contractor something about the others. A quote that prices only the failed part and ignores what drove it to failure leaves the homeowner calling again before the next summer ends.

Half the homes in Queens County, New York were built in 1953 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses built around that period were ducted for equipment that has since been replaced, sometimes more than once, and each replacement left its own modifications inside the original layout. When a contractor opens a system in a house like this, what they find in the ducts and the connections around the unit reflects that layered history. A refrigerant leak or a failed contactor is a straightforward repair; the complication is what surrounds it. Duct joints sealed with materials that have long since dried out, or flex runs added to bridge gaps the original layout never accounted for, can turn a single-component repair into a broader scope of work before the technician has priced a single part.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, attic ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it carries the compressor and the condenser coil. The compressor is where most repair calls start. When the system runs but blows warm air, or shuts off before the house cools, a contractor goes to that unit first.

Inside the house, the air handler or furnace cabinet holds the evaporator coil and the blower. The evaporator coil is the other frequent trouble spot, prone to icing or refrigerant loss. The blower motor and the expansion valve, which sits between the two coils and controls refrigerant flow, round out what a contractor works through when the outdoor unit checks out fine.

The drawing shows a typical central AC layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components and access points apply to your specific home.
