The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components doing the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-and-coil combination occupies a utility space, a basement, or a closet, where it pulls return air across the evaporator coil and pushes conditioned air back through the home.

The refrigerant lines run between the outdoor and indoor units, connecting the two halves of the system through the wall or floor. A dedicated disconnect box gets mounted near the outdoor unit, and a new thermostat goes on an interior wall where the homeowner controls everything.
