Sizing and installation quality matter more in a county with a short cooling season than most homeowners expect. Homes in Onondaga County, NY run cooling in a single month of the year, July. The compressor, the condenser fan, and the contactor each cycle through nearly every start-stop demand of the year inside that window. A system that was undersized at installation, or had its refrigerant charge set wrong, does not get a second month to catch up. A contractor quoting a new installation here has to run a proper load calculation first, because a box that is too large short-cycles through its only real workload and stresses components that then sit dormant until next July.

A closed gray electrical panel mounted on a stone basement wall, with a metal duct above it and a wooden-handled rake leaning against the stone to the right.

Ductwork laid down for a furnace and nothing else was designed around one direction of airflow, one set of return sizes, and a load profile that cooling reverses in several ways. Half the homes in Onondaga County, New York were built in 1964 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history shows up in the duct runs a contractor traces before any equipment is quoted: whether the trunk lines are sized for the static pressure a modern air handler produces, whether returns are placed where cooling needs them, and whether the layout will move conditioned air to the rooms that need it. A contractor who finds the existing ductwork workable can move to equipment selection. One who finds it undersized or poorly routed is looking at a scope of work that the unit price never captured.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house interior showing ducted HVAC piping, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser with fan connected by a line, rendered in grey tones on a white background.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the hardware that does the heavy lifting of the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the indoor half of the cooling loop. Together these two units are what a homeowner is buying when they buy central air.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units, typically along an exterior wall or through a chase, carrying the working fluid that ties the indoor and outdoor sides together. A thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when the system runs and at what target temperature.

Severe Weather Events in Onondaga County

Weather puts a load on cooling equipment, and that load is shaped by local conditions. How hard a system has to work over its life depends on what the climate here actually delivers, which is why regional weather history is part of the picture for any Central AC installation in this area.
