The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil, which together shed the heat pulled from inside. The indoor air handler, usually placed in a utility closet, basement, or attic, holds the evaporator coil and the blower that moves conditioned air through the home.

The two units connect through a pair of refrigerant lines that run between them, and a thermostat on an interior wall gives the homeowner control over the whole system. A condensate drain line also runs from the air handler to carry away the moisture the evaporator coil pulls from the indoor air.
