The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level, and it is where heat pulled from inside the home gets released. When it fails, rooms stop cooling even though the system runs. The indoor air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits inside, most often in a utility room, basement, or attic, and a frozen coil or a failed blower there will cut airflow or cause the system to ice over.

The refrigerant lines run between the two units, and a leak anywhere along them means the system cannot move heat regardless of how well the other components are working. The thermostat, mounted on a wall inside the living space, tells the system when to run, and a faulty signal there can look exactly like a mechanical failure deeper in the equipment.
